Sealing in a kitchen does three jobs. It stops water from getting between the benchtop and the wall, between the splashback and the cabinet, and around the sink edge. It keeps food residue, grease and crumbs out of those same joints where they would otherwise rot, smell and breed mould. And it provides a clean finish line that ties the joinery, stone and tile together visually. A failed kitchen seal usually shows up first as a black line of mould at the back of the benchtop or a soft, lifting edge around the sink.
The trick in a kitchen is product selection. Around the sink and on the splashback, you need a wet-area, mould-resistant silicone. Behind the cooktop and on heat-exposed joints, you need a heat-resistant variant. On engineered stone benchtops you need a neutral-cure product that will not etch the surface. Acid-cure silicones can leave a permanent mark on natural and engineered stone. We carry both and use the right one for each substrate.

For sink, splashback and wet zones we use Soudal and Maxisil mould-resistant silicones, chosen for fast cure, long-term mould resistance and a food-safe finish once cured. On engineered stone and natural stone benchtops we switch to a neutral-cure silicone to prevent etching. Around cooktops and rangehoods, a high-temperature silicone rated for continuous heat exposure. Colour matched to grout, stone or cabinetry on premium jobs.

Almost always mould growth caused by either a non-mould-resistant product (common in DIY tubes) or a failed seal that lets water get behind the bead. Once mould grows behind silicone, surface cleaning does nothing, the joint needs to be stripped and reapplied with a wet-area grade product.
Yes, but we use a neutral-cure silicone specifically. Acid-cure (acetoxy) silicones can etch and stain engineered stone permanently. This is one of the most common DIY mistakes, using the wrong cure type damages the bench far worse than the failed silicone it was meant to fix.
Yes. All our kitchen silicones are certified food-safe once cured. The cure period is 24 hours; after that, contact with food prep surfaces is fine.
Yes. Induction surfaces generate less radiant heat than gas, but we still use a heat-resistant silicone around the cooktop perimeter for long-term durability and easy cleaning.
Yes. We coordinate with kitchen joiners, plumbers and tilers to seal at the right stage of the build. For new joinery installs we usually come in after the stone is templated and installed, but before the tiler does final cuts on the splashback.
Touch-dry within an hour, fully cured at 24 hours. After that, normal use including wet wipe-downs and food prep is fine.
