Polyurethane caulks are the workhorses of external sealing. Unlike silicone, polyurethane bonds aggressively to porous substrates, concrete, brick, masonry, render, timber, and stays flexible enough to absorb significant joint movement without tearing. It can also be painted over once cured, which is critical on rendered facades, exposed concrete and any joint that needs to disappear into a painted finish.
On a Sydney commercial site or a high-rise facade, the polyurethane bead is what stops water ingress at every panel join, window perimeter and expansion gap. On a residential project it shows up at the brick-render interface, around external door frames, at balcony slab joints, and anywhere two structurally different materials meet. The product is more demanding to apply than silicone, it skins faster, it does not tool as forgivingly, and it requires correct backing rod and joint geometry to perform. Done well it lasts 10 to 20 years. Done badly it fails before the first winter.
Seliecone uses professional-grade Soudal polyurethane systems as the default for structural and external work across Sydney. We size the joint, install backing rod where needed, mask the edges, and lay a single uniform bead at the correct depth-to-width ratio. The bead is then tooled to a clean concave profile. For builders and project managers, all material specs, MSDS and SWMS are available on request.

For external and structural work we default to a Soudal one-component polyurethane sealant and adhesive that handles up to 25% joint movement, bonds to concrete, masonry, metal and timber, and is fully paintable. For heavier-duty applications including civil and infrastructure work, a Pasco or Soudal high-performance polyurethane. Backing rod is closed-cell polyethylene at the correct diameter for the joint. Primers used per manufacturer specification on porous substrates.

External walls, render-to-brick interfaces, balcony slab joints, expansion joints in concrete, brick or masonry, around external door and window frames, on metal-to-masonry interfaces, and anywhere the joint will be painted over. Polyurethane is also the right choice for movement joints carrying more than light flexural load.
Yes. Most polyurethane sealants accept paint within 24 hours of curing. This is one of the main reasons polyurethane is preferred for rendered facades and any finished joint that needs to match a painted surface.
External polyurethane joints typically last 10 to 20 years when installed correctly with proper backing rod and joint geometry. Service life depends on UV exposure, joint movement and substrate condition.
Quality polyurethane sealants like those from Soudal are UV-stable for normal external exposure. For continuous direct sun on light-coloured beads, painted-over finishes give the best long-term result.
Yes. Product MSDS, SWMS, insurance certificates and licence documentation are sent through before mobilisation on any trade or commercial site. Compliance is part of the scope.
Yes. We size backing rod, install bond breaker tape where required, and apply at correct depth-to-width ratio for joints of any size, from 6mm interior expansion gaps up to 50mm structural joints on car park decks and external facades.
